10.6 Performing Advanced Patient Searches

Many of the ICE Health System modules have a Patient Search text box at the top right corner of the dashboard.

To search for the files of a particular patient, click to start typing the name, first or last, in the text box. A list of patients with names matching the typed text will appear in a drop-down list. Then, click the patient whose file you wish to open.

Also note that clicking the patient icon at the right of the Patient Search text box will display a drop-down list of the 5 previous patient files viewed from that module. Again, click the patient whose file you wish to open.

However,

  • • if your patient database is very large
  • • if you are searching for a patient with a common name, or
  • • if you are unsure of the exact spelling of a name

Advanced Search options are available and are described below.

Advanced Search Options

A period ‘.’ separates the first and last name. If only one period is placed between names, the period represents the separation of the first name from the last name.

A period ‘.also indicates that the end of a name is known.

For example, if you know the first name, it would be followed by two periods. The first period indicates that the first name has reached the end and the second period represents the separation of the first name from the last name.

Ben..Smith.

In the case above, the search will only look for a Ben Smith. To look for Ben Smith, Benjamin Smith, or Benicio Smith, type the following (ie: only one period between names).

Ben.Smith.

An asterisk ‘*’ may be used to represent the undefined beginning of a name (first or last).

*ly..Smith.

The above search will look for names such as Emily Smith, Lily Smith, or Sally Smith.

Ben..*son.

The above search will look for names such as Ben Thompson, Ben Johnson, or Ben Dyson.
